JEDDAH: Malaysia must explore new business and investments opportunities abroad which can contribute to its economic growth, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. Such steps, he said, are necessary in an effort to diversify economic strategy following plummeting oil prices. However, he noted that the areas to be explored must be matched with the relevant expertise such as Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) which successfully managed the Istanbul International Airport in Turkey.

"MAHB is now interested in managing the Jeddah International Airport. We also see other area such as healthcare, energy and housing. We are constantly on the lookout for opportunities to boost Malaysian participation abroad, including in Saudi Arabia" he said. Najib was speaking to Malaysian media after delivering his keynote address at the Jeddah Economic Forum here last night.

JEF is an annual forum held since 1999, and has served as a driving hub for leaders, economists and businessmen from around the world to discuss and exchange views on global issues. Najib said participation in the forum is beneficial as it is an opportunity to put forward Malaysia's achievements, directly promoting Malaysia on the international stage while at the same time display its policies and approaches.

"This enables us to look for new opportunities via cooperation with Saudi investors on projects here," he said. Earlier in his address, Najib said public private partnerships were important towards nation-building. The prime minister gave an example of Malaysia's experience via the implementation of the privatisation policy in 1983, followed by the introduction of public private partnerships and Private Finance Initiatives in 2006. He said the government also established the Public Private Partnership Unit (UKAS) in 2009, which served as an agency which plans, streamlines and facilitates projects nationwide. "Public private partnerships are also the main thrust in the 10th Malaysia Plan via the Economic Transformation Programme which will drive Malaysia towards high income nation status by 2020."
